Is it recommended to go long-term with emerging market investments?

Asked 4 years ago

I was looking for an emerging market and just haven't found any funds that spark my interest. Is it best to go for long-term or short-term on these investments, and are there any good ETFs that I should know of?

Unfortunately, during market meltdowns, typically one of the first investments to experience an immense selloff is the emerging market. This was evident throughout the February/March 2020 financial crisis.

That said, it can be challenging to get in at a good price because the EM investment vehicles have skyrocketed on optimism in the post-coronavirus recovery.

So, here are three of my top picks if I'm going into the emerging market sector right now:

iShares MSCI Turkey ETF (TUR)

  • 06/09: $23.37
  • Yield: 0.99%
  • YTD Return: -12.84%

Direxion Daily Russia Bull 2X Shares (RUSL)

  • 06/09: $30.10
  • Yield: 1.48%
  • YTD Return: +39.19%

Schwab Emerging Markets Equity ETF (SCHE)

  • 06/09: $33.13
  • Yield: 1.99%
  • YTD Return: +8.32%

Also, as a piece of advice, if you invest in emerging markets, it is best to comb through their leading industries (energy or agriculture, for example) and political stability.
