Which website is the most reliable for NYSE short interest data?
Asked 4 years ago
I'm searching for the most reliable source for daily short sale volume and daily total volume statistics. I'm extracting the data from the web to track the ratio on my personal tool. All the websites have very different numbers 😮 e.g. the April 6th on ZOM stats are from 6% on shortsqueeze.com, to 26% on Finviz, even 41% on shortedvolume.com 🤣 , and Gurufocus is a mess.

A short sale (short Interest) is the sale of stocks you don’t own. People who sell short believe the stock price will fall and buy the stock at a lower price and make a profit. But, you make a loss when the stock price rises and you buy it back at a higher price.
That said, firms must report their short positions as of settlement on the 15th of every month, and the compilation is published eight days later.
Key resources for finding short-interest data are:
1. COMPUSTAT - is a subscription source available to SLU users via the WRDS. Data includes American Stock Exchange, New York Stock Exchange, and NASDAQ.
2. NASDAQ - Is freely available.
3. Wall Street Journal: short interest tables are freely available and provide highlights from NASDAQ, NYSE, and Amex. You can browse, largest positive and negative positions and increase, decrease, and shorts as a percentage change.
4. Global Financial Data - A subscription source available to SLU users. Relevant data includes NYSE Short Interest Ratio and the NYSE Short Interest Shares (monthly, 1931-current).
