Which ETF is better: VOO or SPY?

Asked 3 years ago

I noticed that they have almost identical top ten holdings and minor differences in YTD returns. What has your experience been?

I've found that VOO is slightly cheaper, so you can buy more with the same amount.

If you have several years until retirement and want to invest in your grandchild's education down the line, check out Fidelity Zero Funds.

They are similar but offer 4 different funds instead of one large allocation across all markets as most other mutual fund companies do nowadays!

These particular investments also happen to be super cheap too, trading at around $15 each. It will make them grow over time while still keeping up my retirement income level without getting into huge amounts right away because it is tax-efficient, etc.

The three primary differences are the share price, expense ratio, and holdings.

Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) is trading at around $427 a share, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) is going for about $464.

SPY has a net expense ratio of 0.09%, and VOO has 0.03%.

When it comes to the top ten holdings, the percentage of assets are slightly different. Here is what investors are parking their money in:

SPY Top Ten Holdings

  • Microsoft Corp (MSFT): 5.6%
