Like other financial institutions, Charles Schwab has claimed to offer investment tools that adhere to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.

But are all 51 exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offered in its Intelligent Portfolio socially conscious? This is doubtful because of what is unfolding throughout Wall Street.

Tariq Fancy, a former BlackRock executive described ESGs as a "dangerous placebo that harms the public interest."

It can be hard to determine if Charles Schwab is doing ESG the right way, primarily because of the many inherent problems associated with the sustainable investing phenomenon.

From greenwashing to misleading funds (many of them are overweight in Microsoft), experts agree that more needs to be done pertaining to ESG and socially responsible investing.

Ultimately, it is up to you to determine what is inside your portfolio, which, at Charles Schwab, is created based on your goals, investment amount, timeline, and risk tolerance. The model utilizes more than 80 variations.
