What are the best robo-advisors in the US?

Asked 3 years ago

Hi, I'm a beginner, and I want to use a robo-advisor for stock trading. I figured I could use it to learn. How do I know a good robo-advisor when I see one?

Vanguard Personal Advisor Services is one of the best choices for most people. There are two other popular robo-advisors worth looking into, Acorns and Betterment.

Robo-advisors offer automated investments by selecting stocks, bonds, or ETFs based on your investment preferences. When you sign up for a robo-advisor app (like Vanguard Personal Advisor Services), it starts with some basic questions about your retirement goals and risk tolerance to see which of its prebuilt portfolios would be right for you.

These are usually index funds designed to provide a mix of diversification across an array of different assets classes. Once you set up an account, the robo-advisor will handle the rest. It's important to note that you're not buying stocks directly with a robo-advisor - instead, they buy the underlying assets on your behalf in a group of pre-selected index funds.

A good robo-advisor offers many things such as;

  • help with setting up an account or diversifying an account (which means spreading investments across multiple asset classes)
  • intelligent retirement planning that can provide clients with lifetime income
  • long term care insurance assistance for those who need it most etc

Working with an advisor can be the right way to go for some investors who require additional hands-on service or want to have a human touch.

Robo-advisors carry low or no fees and allow investors direct access to a team of professionals that they can use when needed. In some cases, advisors may charge clients for account services and manage their money hourly or per-transaction level.
