Can stocks/ETFs be transferred from my personal account to TFSA?
Asked 3 years ago
Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well. I have read about the difference between TFSA and a personal account, and I want to know if it is possible to move my entire portfolio of stocks from my Personal account to TFSA? I have a few stocks and ETFs that I want to move to be effective for the next financial year. Does a TFSA support ETFs? Is there any limit I should be aware of? Any extra info would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yes, you can transfer your stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) from your personal account to a tax-free savings account (TFSA).
Although there are some taxed ETFs in a TFSA because of foreign income status (dividends), you are still better off using this type of account for trading.
You do not need to sell the stocks and move cash around. Brokers will help you transfer your entire portfolio to their platforms by completing the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS) form.
When it comes to ETFs and TFSAs, the only thing you need to be aware of is the TFSA limit for 2021, which is $6,000.
Ultimately, depending on the size of your investment portfolio, be sure you are within the overall contribution limit (18 and older).
