American vs. Canadian stocks: Which is better to buy?
Asked 3 years ago
Hi, I'm American, and I'm looking at different stocks to start building my investment portfolio. However, I'm not sure if I should go for American or Canadian stocks? Which would you say is the best stock?

Both U.S. and Canadian financial markets have an abundance of great stocks to choose from.
Obviously, American markets have a lot more liquidity and diversity, whether you want capital gains or a dividend income.
That said, you can find plenty of opportunities in each country in any market.
You just need to consider the exchange rate from U.S. dollars to Canadian dollars - and vice versa.
Ultimately, it comes down to what you want. Plus, there are many Canadian companies that have separate stocks on American exchanges.
For example, Suncor Energy has listings on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange. And, based on your last question, this is also a terrific stock that is way under price and pays a terrific quarterly dividend.
